EXERCISE 27: ASSOCIATION AND DISSOCIATION
1. Association
1. Physiology. Utilize the physiology of association. Lean forward, look from side to side, feel whatever feelings you are experiencing now, and feel a readiness to move, to act in response to whatever happens next.
2. Associate into a Pleasant Memory. Now think of a pleasant memory and take the time to associate into it fully, so that you are there inside it again, looking out of your own eyes, seeing what you saw, hearing what you heard, and enjoy feeling all the good feelings you originally had in that situation.
3. Repeat Step 2. Use several other pleasant memories, one at a time, while maintaining the physiology of association. Pick pleasant memories from widely different contexts—work, play, home, some athletic, some sensual, self-satisfaction and recognition from others, etc. Associate into each one completely, so that you can enjoy feeling those positive and resourceful feelings fully.
4. Ask Your Mind to Associate Only Positively. Now close your eyes, and ask your unconscious mind if it would be willing to be a positive resource for you by automatically allowing you to associate into all positive memories, whenever you recall them. Recognize that in nearly all cases, this will be a wise choice that will enable you to enjoy life more and to be more resourceful in the face of life’s inevitable difficulties. Take the time to be sure that this inner message has been heard and responded to positively. Pause for a moment and relax.
II. Dissociation
1. Physiology of Dissociation. Utilize the physiology of dissociation. Lean back in your chair, and feel your shoulders move back even a bit more. Let your chin move up a bit as your head also moves back, and let your whole body become still.
2. Dissociate from an Unpleasant Memory. Now think of a moderately unpleasant memory and take the time to fully dissociate from it. See yourself in that memory, as if watching a movie on a TV set. It can help to make the movie black and white, or to move that TV set farther away, and let the movie become dimmer and less clear. If you have any trouble dissociating, imagine viewing it through a plate of thick Plexiglas. Enjoy that feeling of being a detached observer, yet interested and curious.
3. Repeat Step 2. Use several other moderately unpleasant memories from a wide variety of contexts—unpleasant experiences at work, play, home, with others and alone, disappointments and mistakes, etc. Dissociate completely from each one, in turn, so that you can enjoy that feeling of being a detached observer, yet interested and curious.
4. Ask Your Mind to Associate Only Positively. Now close your eyes and ask your unconscious mind if it would be willing to be a positive resource for you by allowing you to automatically dissociate from all unpleasant memories whenever you recall them, recognizing that in nearly all cases that will be a wise choice and enable you to enjoy life more and to be more resourceful in the face of life’s inevitable difficulties.
